About Gavin Ross
Gavin Ross profile of a value investor
With more than three decades of industry experience behind him, Gavin has built a formidable reputation as one of Australia's leading investment analysts. After graduating university with an honours degree in economics and finance, Gavin's first job was in stockbroking. It was a baptism of fire during the extraordinary boom times of the late 1960s. From the very beginning, Gavin was astonished by the 'herd mentality' that coerces people to heedlessly follow the crowd.
Gavin was astounded to witness the incredibly high prices that brokers were prepared to moot for stocks in mining companies. He was even more amazed when he found out that 'investors' didn't quibble at paying ridiculous prices for trendy names.
Gavin's scepticism proved well founded when the market crashed in 1972.
A new approach to stock investment
Gavin establish his own portfolio management business in 1977. He had one clear aim in mind — to strive for excellence in investment management.
Through rigorous analysis of businesses and the governance of value investing, Gavin now manages portfolios for a select group of high net worth individuals. Warren Buffett, the legendary US investor, has had a tremendous impact on Gavin.
Buffett's philosophies and strategies immediately resonated with him. According to Gavin, "It was like finding the Holy Grail."
